How to identify symptoms related to a sinus infection and how to treat it with antibiotics and home remedies.

Symptoms of allergies and a cold may be identical to those of a sinus infection, such as a stuffy nose or headache. However, there are ways to tell the difference. Getting treatment as soon as possible will help to reduce the possibility of a serious infection and health deterioration.

Symptoms of a Sinus Infection

Inflammation of the nasal cavity accompanies allergies, colds and sinus infections, also known as sinusitis. There may also be the presence of thick mucus or postnasal drip. When blowing your nose, check to see if the mucus is greenish. If so, this may point to a sinus infection.

When an infection is present, there may also be a fever. A temperature over 98.6, especially by several degrees, is considered a fever. Swelling under the eyes or pain on the eyes, bridge of nose or cheekbones may also point to sinusitis.

Treating an Infection of the Sinuses

If one or more of the above symptoms are experienced, it’s best to make an appointment with your health care provider. It’s important to get a checkup to rule out something more serious, and, if a sinus infection is indeed present, to begin treatment. Allowing the infection to get worse can result in damage to the sinus area and mucous lining.

Provided that a sinus infection has been diagnosed, antibiotics may be prescribed. The usual course is one to four weeks, depending on the severity of the infection. Chronic infections require a longer round of antibiotics while acute sinus infections may need only a week of treatment. Some people may require surgery if nasal polyps are present and closing off sinus passages. It may take a few days before the antibiotics take effect, so over-the-counter antihistamines or nasal decongestants may be helpful in clearing sinuses.

Nasal Saline Irrigation

To help clear sinus passages and make breathing easier, using nasal saline irrigation or a neti pot can help. A neti pot looks like a small, ceramic teapot. It’s usually filled with half a teaspoon of salt for every eight ounces of warm water. The spout of the pot is inserted into one nasal opening and, with the head bent in the opposite direction at a 45 degree angle, the warm salt water is allowed to run into the nose and out the other nostril. This can help to flush out mucus, reduce inflammation and moisturize nasal passages. Repeat this procedure daily until symptoms improve then use two to three times a week afterward, or as needed.

Getting a sinus infection treated as early as possible can help prevent the bacteria from spreading and creating a more serious illness. A week or two of antibiotics, along with simple home remedies, can quickly restore health.
