For those who have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep, kava kava can be a useful herb. It's also beneficial for people suffering from anxiety and tension.

Kava kava was used in Europe as early as the 16th century. This member of the pepper family can reach up to 14 feet in height and has been widely cultivated for hundreds of years throughout the Pacific Islands. It’s been used for centuries to promote relaxation and as a sleep aid. In more modern times it’s been used to help ease PMS, tension, and anxiety.

Side Effects of Insomnia

Sleep deprivation can lead to poor memory, mood swings, depression, racing thoughts, anxiety and irritability. Those who have trouble sleeping may easily put on weight, have low work performance, and struggle to complete everyday tasks.

Some people may lie in bed for hours tossing and turning, while others may fall asleep with no problem but have trouble staying asleep. Kava kava is a natural way to treat sleep problems.

Kava Ingredients and Uses

Kava kava’s active ingredient is kavalactones, which create a sedating effect, very much like alcoholic beverages do. Those who have taken kava kava report feeling mildly sedated, having vivid dreams, and a slight numbing of the mouth. Some reports have shown that kava kava may be as effective as sedatives like diazepam.

Along with helping one to sleep better, kava kava is also beneficial to help reduce stress by relaxing the mind and body without drowsiness. It helps to increase mental alertness, is a muscle relaxer, and promotes feelings of satisfaction, confidence, and peace, while creating a more positive outlook in people who take it.

Kava Dosage and Warnings

To help with insomnia and restless sleep, the usual dosage is 250mg half an hour before bedtime. For anxiety and stress, 250mg can be taken one to three times a day.

Kava kava has been shown to be safe when taken according to directions, though it may be addicting to some users since it produces slight feelings of euphoria and relaxes muscles. For those who take higher doses of kava, it may have the tendency to elevate liver enzymes. It’s good to cycle kava by taking it for up to three months then switching to another herb that helps with relaxation such as valerian, skullcap, catnip, or chamomile.

Kava shouldn’t be used alongside tranquilizers or sleeping pills—whether prescription or over the counter. Do no take kava with alcohol since it can increase the sedative effect of the herb. Users should not drive or operate heavy machinery when taking kava as it can impair motor function. If any allergies or negative side effects are noticed when taking this herb, discontinue use and seek medical advice.

As a natural remedy for insomnia, kava kava is safe and effective when taken as directed. It can help combat many of the reasons why people find it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep, such as anxiety, racing mind, and tension.
