There are many expensive lotions on the market made especially for dry, itchy, calloused hands and feet, but making it at home is cheaper.

Many people often experience dry, itchy skin and callouses, especially on their hands, elbows and feet. Poor circulation, dry skin, walking barefoot, using hand tools and/or a fungal infection are a few reasons for dry, rough skin. This recipe makes a soothing and healing hand and foot lotion for anyone with rough skin. It’s effective, easy to make, and low in cost.

Ingredients Needed

  • 4 ounces olive oil
  • 4 ounces petroleum jelly (such as Vaseline)
  • 1 vitamin E capsule - 400IU
  • Small bottle of tea tree oil
  • Empty 8oz bottle with lid
  • Wire whisk
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Funnel
  • Mixing bowl

Mixing the Lotion

  1. Pour the olive oil into the mixing bowl then add the petroleum jelly. Mix well with the wire whisk until the mixture is smooth. Alternately, an electric mixer or fork can be used to blend the ingredients.
  2. Once the olive oil and Vaseline are well blended, pierce the vitamin E capsule with a pin then squeeze the oil into the bowl. Vitamin E helps with skin healing and cell renewal, and acts as a natural preservative, keeping the olive oil from going rancid. Throw the empty capsule into the trash.
  3. At this point add 1/4 teaspoon of the tea tree oil to the mixture in the bow and blend well with the whisk. Tea tree oil helps to heal skin irritation and combats bacteria and yeast that may be present on the skin. It's also soothing if skin is dry and itchy.
  4. Once the mixture is thoroughly blended, place the funnel into the bottle opening and pour the lotion into the empty bottle. An old shampoo, lotion or liquid soap bottle works well for this project. Screw the lid on and either use the lotion right away, or set aside for later.

Using the Homemade Lotion

This lotion works best when using it before going to sleep at night since it will have time to soak in for several hours. It can soften even the driest skin. Before using this lotion, be sure to wash hands and feet with warm water and soap first. Using a clean, absorbent towel, thoroughly dry your hands and feet.

Open the bottle of lotion, put some into the palm of your hand and rub it into your feet, massaging it in thoroughly, paying special attention to the soles and heels of feet, elbows, knees, or any place where skin is very dry. Apply to hands and rub it in until well absorbed. Before going to bed, put on a pair of clean cotton socks that don’t fit too tightly.

If your feet and hands are very rough or calloused, it may take a few weeks before the hardened skin sloughs off. In time, your skin should be much smoother. This is an excellent lotion that can also repair cracked heels.
