A book is always judged by its cover, so making the best first impression is a must when trying to land the perfect job.

When going on a job interview it’s important to look successful. Wearing the right clothes may mean the difference between getting the position or being passed over for someone who looks like a perfect fit. Following are some dos and don’ts when it comes to making a great first impression.

Dressing for a Job Interview

If possible, pay a visit to the establishment before the interview to see how everyone else dresses. Sometimes dressing too formally or too casually can mean losing the chance at getting the job. If there isn't time or an opportunity to check out the other employees or managers, simply dress professionally, like someone who’s on their way up in the world.

Most jobs prefer that employees cover up any tattoos and take out piercings. This may mean wearing long sleeves for those with tattoos on their arms or putting in a clear post instead of a nose ring or lip piercing.

Wear clothes that fit well. Slacks, skirts, blouses or shirts that fit too tight or too loose will give the impression that the one being interviewed doesn’t care about outward appearance. An prospective employer may feel that if a person doesn't take their looks seriously then they won’t take the job seriously.

Even if the position isn’t the suit-and-tie type, it’s best to look presentable and serious, always choosing conservative clothing.

What Women Should Wear to an Interview

The following suggestions are safe bets when it comes to dressing appropriately for a job interview. Although not every job would insist on conservative clothing, looking professional is important. Most people have at least a few wardrobe basics that can be pulled together to make an acceptable outfit for an interview.

  • Dark colored slacks or skirt that sits just above or below the knees and matching blazer.
  • Simple blouse in a coordinating color that fits well – not too tight, too loose or too low cut.
  • Closed toe shoes in a dark color that are flat or with no more than a two-inch heel.
  • Flesh-colored pantyhose. Although it’s common for women to not wear hosiery with skirts, it gives a more polished and professional look to wear them.
  • Understated jewelry. Stay with pearls, gold and silver, though nothing too big or gaudy.
  • Professional hairstyle and avoid any non-mainstream hair colors. The most acceptable hair colors are blonde, auburn, brown and black.
  • Light perfume and makeup
  • Neatly trimmed and manicured nails. Avoid bright nail polish colors or nails that are too long.

What Men Should Wear to an Interview

It's not necessary to go out and buy a suit just for an interview. Looking presentable and professional only takes a few pieces of clothing put together to create the right outfit for an interview. Acceptable attire for a job interview would consist of the following suggestions.

  • A well-fitting suit in a dark, solid color
  • Long sleeved button-up shirt in a coordinating, solid color
  • Clean-shaven, or well-trimmed facial hair
  • Conservative tie. Avoid bright colors or patterns.
  • Dark dress shoes and dark socks
  • Professional hairstyle and hair color. Avoid dying hair any color not considered mainstream. Stick with colors like brown, black, blonde, etc.
  • Neatly trimmed nails

Be Neat and Clean on Interviews

For both men and women, one thing to keep in mind is good hygiene. Be certain to wear clean clothes, to shower, use deodorant and brush teeth before going on an interview. This may seem like common knowledge, but there have been many people ideal for a position and who dressed to perfection, yet poor hygiene – whether they were in a hurry that morning or simply forgetful – lost them the job.

It's possible to get that dream job by appearing professional and like a perfect fit for the position. Wearing conservative attire and looking neat and clean when arriving for the interview can go a long way in making a good impression on potential employers. Never underestimate the power of dressing for success when it comes to applying for a new job.
