People who try to lose weight are always looking for a miracle pill, something that will help them eat less and feel good too. 5-HTP may be the answer.

5-hydroxytryptophan, better known as 5-HTP, is a neurotransmitter the body creates and is used to regulate the levels of serotonin in the brain and nervous system. 5-HTP is converted from tryptophan in the body, or can be purchased as a supplement. The supplements are made from extracts of the seeds of the African tree Griffonia simplicifolia. By taking a 5-HTP supplement it can raise the levels of serotonin and reduce carbohydrate cravings, binge eating, and promote mental relaxation while dieting.

Choosing the Best Supplement

When buying 5-HTP, be sure to purchase it from a reputable source. Local pharmacy shops such as Walgreen's or CVS carry this supplement, as well as online vitamin and supplement sites such as iHerb and Vitacost. Be sure to read the label before purchasing the product since some companies may add other ingredients that aren’t necessary or desired for weight loss. To get the best appetite suppressant from this supplement, it is recommended to purchase just 5-HTP. A few good brands are Natrol, Doctor’s Best, and Now Foods.

Dosage of 5-HTP

It may be tempting to go for the highest strength on the shelf, but too much too fast can lead to nausea, headaches, and digestive disturbances. It’s best to purchase this amino acid in 50-milligram capsules and try this for a few weeks. Over time the dosage can be increased, though many people have good results with the lower dose.

To help curb carbohydrate cravings, improve mood, and aid in weight loss, the typical dosage of 5-HTP is 50mg – 100mg before meals taken with a full glass of water. This can be taken up to three times a day.

Long Term Benefits of 5-HTP

The supplement has been shown to be completely safe when taken according to package directions. Some people may choose to only take it for six or eight weeks to jump start their diet program, while others may stay on it long-term. Since it’s been shown to improve mood, lift depression, lower blood pressure and calm anxiety, many users take it indefinitely without any noticeable side effects.

The main reason most diets fail is because the dieter craves certain foods, feels hungry, and/or irritable or depressed. For those who are trying to lose weight, this supplement could be the answer to easily cutting back on food intake without much effort.

Although there are many reports and studies done on the safety and effectiveness of 5-hydroxytryptophan for weight loss and as an appetite suppressant, it’s best to consult with your physician before taking it. 5-HTP should not be taken by those who are on medication for Parkinson's Disease, depression, or pain medications.
